Mental Illness & Incarceration

In this episode, I interview social worker, Valerie Wise, about the correlation between mental illness and incarceration in the Black and Brown communities. Valerie recommends a biographical book by L. C. Bruce on the topic-- Fit for Trial: Mental Illness, the Law and Family Loss coming January 17, 2022. We discuss the effects of generational trauma and systemic racism that is still active today. We shine the light on the problem and ask each listener to do what they can around their own moral compass of what is right. Valerie recommends and belongs to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). For further discussion or to speak on the topics, Valerie can be reached at her website: www.valeriedwise.com, Email: lifedancer1@comcast.net or Phone: 708-269-8063.
